Quantum spin excitations of Cr-jarosite

Abstract: Within the field of condensed matter physics, the study of frustrated antiferromagnets is at the forefront of current research. In frustrated antiferromagnets, the geometry of the crystal lattice results in large quantum ground state degeneracy. One effect of this is to allow different types of exotic excitations and new phases of matter to exist, among which is the quantum spin liquid. Quantum spin liquids may have applications in the development of topological quantum computers, and in the understanding of high-temperature superconductivity. In this project, we will study the material chromium-jarosite. Jarosites have previously been hard to synthesize, but new methods now allow us to investigate these exciting materials. Using MARI, we will study a powder sample in order to determine the quantum spin excitations in the material, which can shed light on the possible spin liquid nature
