Inelastic neutron spectroscopy investigations of lignin-derived hard carbon
Abstract: Hard carbon (HC) has received considerable attention in recent years as a cheap, sustainable anode for lithium ion batteries and sodium ion batteries. However, the storage mechanisms are still not certain for either ion. In particular, there is debate over the role of persistent hydrogen groups at the edge of graphene-like sheets. We wish to use inelastic neutron spectroscopy to observe and quantify the amounts of sp2 and sp3 C-H bonds in lignin-derived HC as a function of temperature.
