Exploring grain - ice mantle interactions and dynamics for the extraterrestrial context

Abstract: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a wide class of organic molecules with multiply fused aromatic rings, are ubiquitous in the interstellar medium. In the condensed phase they are expected as precursors to small graphitic grains or condensation nuclei for icy grain mantles, from which they can be transformed into more complex organic and bio-relevant molecules. However, the paths for these processes remain relatively unexplored and little is known of the dynamic behaviour around these carbonaceous, icy grains. From the background of our previous studies of the dynamics of adsorbed PAHs on graphitic surfaces, we propose to explore the pre-melting dynamics of water ice and PAH/water ice mixtures on graphite as a model of icy grains, specifically, the small PAH, fluoranthene, which is well characterised alone and of a symmetry rendering it a particularly relevant astrochemical model.
