Muons for Energy Nanonics

Abstract: LiFePO4 (LFP) is a commercially applied cathode material for lithium ion batteries. With its Li ion hopping predominantly occurring along one-dimensional channels, LFP is a very good case study material for nanoeffects in Li ion dynamics. In an earlier work, we studied extensively the effect of confinement of fully lithiated LFP with muSR using the emu system. Now as a continuation, we would like to study ion diffusion in partially delithiated LixFePO4 (x<1) nanoparticles. In our lab we developed a protocol prepare these samples in electrochemical cells which allows us to select very accurately the degree of delithiation. With this experiment we hope to gain further insights about the dynamics in LFP nanoparticles when cycled under typical battery conditions.
