Investigation of the spin dynamics of Shastry-Sutherland phase in Ce2-xPd2+yIn1-z
Abstract: The Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) can be described as a 2D square lattice built up from a network of dimers disposed orthogonally and has been observed in SrCu2(BO2)3. Recently SSL has been realised in Ce2T2X (T=transition metal and X=Sn, In) compounds, in which the Ce atoms form layers structure similar to SSL. Some of us have recently investigated the bulk properties of Ce2-xPd2+yIn1-z and have found a possibility of SSL and dimer formation between 0.9 and 3.5 K in these alloys for Pd2+y = 2.20 and 2.25 from the jump in the magnetization and magnetic entropy, Rln(3). The phase diagram as a function of either Pd composition or applied field exhibits a critical region, where two magnetic phase transitions merge. Considering the important of SSL in frustrated magnetism, we propose here to investigate y=2.2 and 2.4 alloys using inelastic neutron scattering and muon spin rotation.
