The search for new porous materials is increasingly be driven by socio-economic pressure to diversify our energy supply and minimize environmental impact. Carbon-based nanostructured materials (CNMs) have been extensively investigated as potential hydrogen storage media but still with a limited success. Strong indications, however, of the untapped potential of CNMs as next-generation sorbents are coming from numerical and theoretical work, in particular in the form of graphitic structures with interlayer optimised distances (S. Patchkovskii et al., Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. 102, 10439 (2005)). The present proposal seeks to explore the intercalation of 1-Pr into Graphite Oxide since recent XDR studies have revealed its high potential for the obtention of ordered pillared graphite structures in the adequate range of interlayer distances.
