Hydrogen induced magnetic structure changes in NdGaDx

Abstract: Renewable technologies are essential for a sustainable future. Materials with applications in hydrogen storage and/or with magnetic properties are desirable for green energy applications. NdGa is a compound that can both absorb large quantities of hydrogen and has magnetic properties at cryogenic temperatures. The structural impact upon absorbing hydrogen in NdGa is substantial with two hydrogen positions that absorbing in sequence, and there are weak extra features that indicate formation of a superstructure in the full hydride phase. The hydrogen also impacts the magnetism, where the magnetic behavior drastically changes with the hydrogen content. This proposal aims at studying the hydrogen positions in the full hydride and a monohydride to reveal preference in the absorbing properties, as well as their corresponding magnetic structures.
