Can the second moment of the Bragg edge be resolved for neutron strain measurement?

Abstract: Currently on IMAT time of flight neutron spectroscopy of a polycrystalline material shows a blurred Bragg edge defining the component of strain in the direction of the neutron. Our ultimate aim is to tomographically reconstruct 3D images of the strain tensor field, and this involves at least the second moment of the derivative of the neutron spectrum. In this experiment we aim to show that the the second moment can be measured accurately on IMAT and specify realistic operational modes that will be needed to capture the minimum amount of accurate data. To validate the results we will measure the strain at specific locations using neutron diffraction with Engin-X.
